How to achieve the function of lateral rotation:

1.   Air Chambers: Anti-decubitus mattresses consist of multiple air chambers or cells that are inflated and deflated alternately.   These chambers are strategically placed along the mattress surface, particularly in areas prone to pressure ulcers, such as the buttocks and hips.

2.   Alternating Pressure: The mattress is connected to an air pump that controls the inflation and deflation of the air chambers.   The pump is programmed to alternate the pressure within the chambers, inflating and deflating them in a specific sequence or pattern.

3.   Lateral Rotation Mode: Some anti-decubitus mattresses have a specific mode called “lateral rotation.”   In this mode, the air chambers on one side of the mattress inflate while the chambers on the opposite side deflate.   This creates a gentle tilting or turning motion, simulating the effect of manual turning or repositioning the patient.

4.   Angle Adjustment: The angle of rotation can often be adjusted to meet the individual needs of the patient.   The rotation angle can typically be set to a predetermined degree, such as 15° or 30°, depending on the healthcare professional’s recommendation and the patient’s condition.

5.   Timing and Duration: The timing and duration of the lateral rotation cycles can also be adjusted.   Healthcare professionals may recommend specific time intervals for rotation, such as every 2 hours or as needed.   The duration of each rotation cycle can vary, typically ranging from a few minutes to an hour.

6.   Safety Features: Anti-decubitus mattresses with lateral rotation function often come with safety features to ensure patient comfort and prevent injury.   These may include gradual rotation initiation, slow and controlled rotation speed, and the ability to pause or stop the rotation if necessary.

By implementing the lateral rotation function, anti-decubitus mattresses help in periodically changing the patient’s position, redistributing pressure, and reducing the risk of pressure ulcers.   This feature promotes better blood circulation, relieves localized pressure, and improves overall patient comfort and well-being.
